Great Sand Dunes National Park

The Great Sand Dunes National Park is a magnificent land of contrasting Colorado scenery and fun outdoor opportunities. This is an amazing Colorado national park with high mountain peaks hovering over desert like sand dunes.

Location

The Great Sand Dunes National Monument is located near Alamosa Colorado in the Southern region of the state. The closest major airport is located in Colorado Springs but Alamosa has a small airport.

The Sand Dunes

The Sand Dunes are prime for sandboarding and it is easy to cool off in Medano Creek at the base of the dunes. This is a unique bit of Colorado scenery with sand dunes in the foreground and massive 13ers in the backdrop.

Wetlands

The park supports a large area of wetlands where waterfowl and bird watching is wonderful. The wetlands are necessary to keep the sand dunes intact and they are an integral part of the parks ecosystem.

Wildlife

The park and the surrounding area is home to an abundance of waterfowl, elk, mule deer, coyotes, mountain lions, and bison.

Best Sand Dunes Hiking

The entire area of the sand dunes are open for exploration. There are no trails in the dunes and the sand is very hot in the summer.

The Park has access to a large area of backcountry in the Sangre De Cristo Range. For long destination hikes with wildlife viewing opportunities consider the 9 mile trek to Cold Creek or the great scenery from the Aspen Camp.
