Taylor River

by John
(Salt Lake City, UT, United States)

The first time I fished the Taylor I went to the legendary hog trough. I had not done any research about hatches and only had 2 hours to fish. When I arrived it was crowded but the Green Drakes were coming off in big numbers and giant fish were slamming them on the surface. I had 2 green drake patterns. The first pattern was broken off on a huge rainbow after ten minutes of fishing. I put on a fresh leader and ran some 3x tippet to the second green drake dry fly. I caught about 20 fish and stayed several hours past my deadline. I caught three rainbows over 24 inches. It was the best day of fishing I have ever had. Although the river was crowded, most people were friendly and the scenery in Taylor Canyon was incredible.
